England Street

2021

An original cottage situated on a northwest-facing plot in Linwood, included a rear extension housing essential amenities such as the kitchen, dining, laundry, toilet, and bathroom spaces. This addition performed poorly in the earthquakes, resulting in poor functionality and disconnect from the surrounding outdoor environment. The internal spaces lacked cohesion and were insufficient for our clients lifestyle.

Field Studio worked closely alongside our clients to develop alterations to the existing cottage and construction of a new extension which celebrates their love of hosting and the outdoors.

Clear passage

Spanning the length of the house, the corridor serves as a definitive axis, creating a connection between the existing cottage and the newly constructed rooms. The corridor provides a clear and direct pathway through the home, guiding you through the living spaces and into the garden, while offering a sense of continuity and cohesion.

Entertaining seasons

The new kitchen and dining area is light and bright, opening onto a spacious deck, perfect for entertaining in both winter and summer. Through installation of large windows and openings, this new social space seamlessly connects the indoors and outdoors.

Functional design

The England Street extension is thoughtfully designed to enhance functionality, offering ample space to meet the diverse needs of the clients. Essential amenities like the bathroom, WC, storage, and utility room are centrally located, serving as a solid core and elevating the residence's appeal both aesthetically and practically. Durable materials have been meticulously chosen for use throughout the home, ensuring longevity and resilience against wear and tear while maintaining a timeless visual appeal.
