VFL Canopy & Shell Kahikatea Common

2022

Privately owned industrial building takes on a public service

An industrial building sits on the corner of St Asaph and Montreal Street in central Ōtautahi. It has a long history, but sustained major damage due to the 2010-11 Canterbury earthquakes. The VFL building (named for its recent occupant Vehicle Financing and Loans) was once known as the Public Service Garage, and for a long period was used as a mechanics’ yard for New Zealand Post.

Field Studio was engaged by the Donnithorne family, owners of the building, to lead the earthquake strengthening and restoration of the building’s shell and canopy. The scope of work included structural upgrades to the roof and supporting framework, new internal finishes, and high-performance shopfront joinery along the facade. Through careful planning and execution, Field Studio retained the original beams, showcasing a sensitive integration of original and contemporary architectural elements.

Unusual for these types of commercial projects, the VFL building is beautifully integrated with the surrounding public walkway. An overhanging canopy 16 metres wide, 42m long and 5.3m high provides shelter over Kahikatea Common, a public space planned with Crown rebuild company Ōtākaro Ltd. The Donnithornes were pleased to be part of creating a peaceful area for those who live or work nearby or travel through.

This project, as part of South Frame’s Kahikatea Common, is "a wonderful opportunity for a lot of the buildings and a lot of the land in the area to repurpose" - Jason Donnithorne
