Field Studio of Architecture and Urbanism is a creative and dynamic design practice. We work collaboratively to deliver values-based and high quality architectural projects across a range of scales and sectors.&nbsp;
Along with residential builds and major commercial projects, we contribute to projects and organisations that have a positive impact on the community it serves. Drawing on our 10 years experience of community development following the Canterbury earthquakes, Field has developed significant experience working on projects that have social, cultural, ecological and values-based purposes. We have a diverse portfolio of projects across Ōtautahi Christchurch, throughout Aotearoa New Zealand, and internationally.

Our team is diverse, highly skilled, and above all, collaborative. We foster strong working relationships with clients, stakeholders, consultants and contractors to enable us to respond effectively to the needs of each project, ultimately achieving high quality architectural outcomes.

Our design process starts with listening to the people involved to better understand the needs of the project. We then integrate and balance these needs and aspirations through different design mediums, ensuring collective understanding and involvement in decision making.

From small-scale residential to major commercial builds, our professional skills and experience means we are able to ensure high quality architecture that is fit for purpose, efficiently and creatively achieved.

<img width="4961" height="2790" width_o="4961" height_o="2790" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/0a935944c8ef7acc1dddddef814f6c2865e64d58691754098a41d52753ca6250/220720_Youth-Hub_Overview.jpg" data-mid="218363033" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/0a935944c8ef7acc1dddddef814f6c2865e64d58691754098a41d52753ca6250/220720_Youth-Hub_Overview.jpg" />A pioneering complex to support and empower rangatahi
All young people require support from time to time, and in Aotearoa, 1 in 10 face severe adversity in many aspects of their lives including health, education, employment and housing. On top of everyday challenges, Christchurch’s rangatahi have endured the 2010-11 earthquakes, 2019 mosque shootings and the COVID-19 pandemic. These events are hard on everyone but are often crippling for young people already suffering adversity.

The Youth Hub Christchurch aims to break this cycle of adversity for local young people aged 10-25. Based in the heart of central Christchurch, The Youth Hub Christchurch will be the first of its kind in Aotearoa, connecting socially supportive organisations under one roof to deliver a holistic one-stop model of wrap-around services including: mental health, medical, education, employment, transitional housing, recreation, creativity, and social entrepreneurship. It will do this in a youth-centric and accessible environment where young people feel accepted and supported as they develop into adults with respect to their ethnicity, culture, sexual orientation and gender.“It is exciting to have a facility that has been designed with the future of our young people in mind. It will not only provide immediate support in the health and housing space, it will also nurture education, recreation, and cultural development. It is setting our rangatahi up for long-term success.”&nbsp;
Leighton Evans, Rātā Foundation Chief Executive

Elevating rangatahi voices through a collaborative design process
Field Studio and The Youth Hub Trust have centred the needs and opinions of youth throughout the design process, running interviews, workshops and design hui with rangatahi from Christchurch Youth Council, Te Puna Wai, 298 Youth Health, Pacific Youth Leadership &amp; Transformational Council, St Andrew’s College Diversity Group, Avonside Girls High School and Te Ora Hou Ōtautahi. The information gathered, along with other stakeholder feedback, formed the guiding design principles and brief for the hub, and consultation is ongoing to ensure that the hub design is meeting the needs of the young people that it is for.

Additionally, Field Studio worked closely with Matapopore and Pasifika cultural advisors to integrate important cultural celebration and sensitivity into the design at all scales and stages. The kahikatea tree was gifted as the cultural design framework for The Youth Hub, symbolising life and the interconnectedness of all things. The kahikatea represents many of the kaupapa that this facility will embody strength, connection, whanau and hauora.

Projects within projects: Diverse design to meet the needs of a multi-use hub

The Youth Hub: Stage 1 opened its doors in November 2024, offering a thoughtfully designed environment for both the public and staff. At its core, the Wrap Around Services building features a striking public atrium, creating a welcoming heart for the space. This building includes consultation rooms aimed at supporting the physical and mental well-being of rangatahi, alongside a variety of work and meeting spaces for youth support services, as well as special design elements such as the Atrium Kahikatea Planter and Feature Walls.

The Supported Housing provides a mix of communal areas such as kitchens, lounges, and laundry facilities, all crafted with care to feel homely and non-institutional. Each bedroom is designed to foster comfort and security, offering a sense of belonging. These spaces are seamlessly connected by a variety of outdoor areas, including roof decks, gardens, and a vibrant&nbsp; Activities Courtyard featuring co-design murals, offering opportunities for both recreation and reflection.

Future Stages
The Youth Hub is more than just a building - it is a community-driven, youth-centred initiative that sets a new benchmark for sustainability, inclusivity and collaboration.

Through innovative design, strong stakeholder commitment, and extensive community involvement, the project has created a safe, inspiring and functional space that empowers young people to thrive, connect and build their futures.
This success is a reflection of the dedication of The Youth Hub Trust, architectural team, engineers, contractors, funders, volunteers and the wider community, all working together to bring this vision to life. Supported Housing Shaped by Rangatahi

The Supported Housing at The Youth Hub offers a unique model of cohousing, designed to provide young people aged 16-25 with a safe, nurturing environment for up to 18 months. Comprising 23 bedrooms, including two accessible rooms, this private, residential wing fosters independence while offering vital support services.

Connected to the Wrap Around Services, the Supported Housing provides holistic care for young residents, creating a seamless connection between transitional accommodation and wider support.&nbsp; Rangatahi were directly involved in shaping the brief through workshops and surveys, ensuring the housing reflected their needs for safety, autonomy, and self-expression. Guided by principles of hakapapa &amp; whenua, accessibility, empowerment, inclusivity, and relationships, the two-storey housing sits discreetly within the urban context, designed with a form that respects and reflects neighbouring homes.

Shared Spaces for Choice and Connection

A mix of shared communal spaces, including lounges, kitchens, dining areas, a laundry, quiet zones, and outdoor terraces, supports both social interaction and privacy. With an emphasis on fostering independence, the design includes sensitive circulation routes that allow for a balance between social and private spaces. Multiple access points provide residents the freedom to choose either more communal routes or quieter, more solitary paths, ensuring they feel safe, secure, and empowered within their living environment.

Rooms with individual character

Feedback from residents shaped unique layouts, window arrangements, colours, and ceiling heights, celebrating individuality and diversity. This thoughtful approach ensures that no two rooms feel the same, further enhancing the sense of ownership and comfort, helping each resident feel connected to their space in a meaningful way. Each private bedroom includes a shower, toilet, wardrobe, desk, and bed, with custom-built furniture for durability. Ground-floor rooms each have a private outdoor deck floating above wetland inspired planting, while upper-floor units feature varied ceiling volumes and skylights to create uplifting and unique spaces.

Materials were selected to balance cost, durability, and atmosphere. Light timber, long-run metal cladding, marmoleum flooring, carpets, and coloured Autex panels create warmth, acoustic control, and a calm, inviting environment. Visible timber throughout reinforces a non-institutional, homely feel.

An original cottage situated on a northwest-facing plot in Linwood, included a rear extension housing essential amenities such as the kitchen, dining, laundry, toilet, and bathroom spaces. This addition performed poorly in the earthquakes, resulting in poor functionality and disconnect from the surrounding outdoor environment. The internal spaces lacked cohesion and were insufficient for our clients lifestyle.

Field Studio worked closely alongside our clients to develop alterations to the existing cottage and construction of a new extension which celebrates their love of hosting and the outdoors.
Clear passage
Spanning the length of the house, the corridor serves as a definitive axis, creating a connection between the existing cottage and the newly constructed rooms. The corridor provides a clear and direct pathway through the home, guiding you through the living spaces and into the garden, while offering a sense of continuity and cohesion.

Entertaining seasons&nbsp;

The new kitchen and dining area is light and bright, opening onto a spacious deck, perfect for entertaining in both winter and summer. Through installation of large windows and openings, this new social space seamlessly connects the indoors and outdoors.

Functional design&nbsp;

The England Street extension is thoughtfully designed to enhance functionality, offering ample space to meet the diverse needs of the clients. Essential amenities like the bathroom, WC, storage, and utility room are centrally located, serving as a solid core and elevating the residence's appeal both aesthetically and practically. Durable materials have been meticulously chosen for use throughout the home, ensuring longevity and resilience against wear and tear while maintaining a timeless visual appeal.

Nuli’s Place converts an existing street-side sleepout above a single garage into a standalone home. Through a carefully considered small addition and renovations, it investigates and reshapes the experience of living on a suburban hillside site in Christchurch.

The project introduces a new form and a connecting wing that links with the old and establishes a direct connection to the street. The entry steps rise directly from the footpath, doubling as public seating for the adjacent bus stop and creating an unusually open threshold between the home and its neighbourhood.

From inside, a bay window frames close, engaging views to the footpath and the park opposite, encouraging a sense of connection between private spaces and the public realm.

At just 65m², the new home explores how compact architecture can support autonomy, ageing in place, and a richer relationship with the surrounding community — testing how modest, finely scaled buildings can contribute positively to Christchurch’s changing residential fabric.

The new form nestles into the steeply sloping site and existing plantings with a deliberately angled roof and walls. It is carefully positioned and shaped to preserve an existing kōwhai tree and the path leading up to the main house.

The addition is compact in plan, being only about 16m2, but steps vertically through three levels — basement, “ground floor,” and mezzanine — following the slope from street to hillside - at its lowest point it is about 1.5m tall, and at its tallest, about 7m. Upper levels take advantage of the roof’s geometry with a bed platform mezzanine with carefully placed openings to capture light and frame views, and create privacy. The middle level remains tucked into the slope, facing out and engaging with the street. The lowest level provide the practicality of basement space and services.

From the upper part of the site, where the main house sits at the rear, the new dwelling is read quite differently. Seen from the garden path, it appears as a smaller, almost perched structure nestled among vegetation — more like a bird house tucked into the hillside than the striking form experienced from the street. This uphill perspective, and nestling into the trees, softens the architecture, creating a gentle visual relationship between the two homes and reinforcing the layered, multi-level character of the site.

Te Ora Hou Ōtautahi is committed to the holistic development of young people, their whānau and communities. Their mahi is wide reaching and includes supporting rangatahi and their whānau through education, mentoring, social work and transition support.

Field Studio’s work with Te Oro Hou has been two major projects; first, the arrangement of second hand portacoms on site for their work and educational spaces and second, the design of a new whare on their land.

When we first became involved with Te Ora Hou Ōtautahi, they had recognised a need for a space that better served the needs of their community, and staff activities. They had purchased four prefabricated buildings from the University of Canterbury, and brought on our architectural expertise to position and build out these spaces and enable them to function as a whole. &nbsp;

To begin the process, several hui were held with Te Ora Hou to help us understand how the prefabs would be used, in order to best connect and fit out these spaces. The ambition was to create both a meaningful physical environment for rangatahi, and a highly practical work space for staff to host the various programmes run here. We devised a system of raised decking that connects the buildings and provides an elevated walkway for staff and rangatahi. The cluster of buildings surround a well used basketball court, and the decks on each side mean a sunny spot to work or take a break is never far away.

The staff lounge has a fully equipped kitchen to handle large events, and a decidedly relaxing atmosphere (complete with espresso maker and fireplace). It has fast become the heart of the campus.

Designed from the Inside Out

The Wrap-Around Services [WAS] building at the heart of The Youth Hub was shaped by a complex programme of varied user groups and uses in order to cater for the multifaceted needs of rangatahi youth. This building is designed to be a welcoming, open environment, centered around a double-height atrium which floods the space with natural light. Shared spaces encourage interaction without feeling territorial, and smaller, intimate spaces offer privacy and comfort. This building formed Stage 1 of the wider Youth Hub development in order to give youth immediate access to care and support. In future stages, this building will be surrounded by apartments, events space, and a new manaaki welcome area and cafe, meaning the exteriors were carefully designed with this long term vision in mind.

Youth engagement workshops emphasised the need to address environmental concerns and foster a connection to nature, which&nbsp; directly resulted in a shift to CLT engineered timber framing, a significantly lower carbon alternative to steel and concrete structure. Soft, natural materials and colors used throughout the space serve as a means to create a homely, non-institutional feel. The atrium benefits from special design elements like lighting provided by David Trubridge, Feature Walls and Kahikatea Planter which houses the central Mauri stone.

Creating space for support at every level
The ground floor focuses on accessibility and engagement. Clear access to reception and circulation areas removes barriers to support services, while a separate entrance from Gracefield Avenue ensures discreet access. Quiet meeting booths with Autex sound insulation, friendly consultation rooms with natural light and outdoor views, and a range of flexible spaces provide a welcoming environment for rangatahi to access support.

Upstairs, purpose-built offices and workspaces accommodate a variety of youth services, from open-plan hot desks to private offices and sound-proofed rooms. Autex wall linings enhance acoustics, while natural light and views support staff well-being. Shared staff spaces, including a terrace, encourage collaboration and connection between organisations.

Designed to make the most out of every move
The rooftop, fully accessible via lift, has been designed to become an additional social and sanctuary space. The planters included on the roof perform multiple and vital functions to avoid being value engineered out and to maximise the potential of every aspect of design. For example, the rooftop planters contribute to the site’s total permeable area, provide protection from falling, allow for the occupation of underutilized rooftop space and further integrate greenery/natural environment into the building design. They also allow for youth horticulture and wider community engagement via collaboration with urban agriculture initiatives.

Through the Wrap-Around Services building, The Youth Hub moves beyond the traditional clinic or social service model - creating a safe, welcoming, and uplifting environment that supports rangatahi and the wider community.

A collaborative mural project bringing colour and life to the Youth Hub Activities Courtyard

At Field Studio, we love when architecture becomes a canvas for creative expression and community engagement. As part of the Youth Hub Christchurch, we teamed up with SCAPE Public Art to help turn 164m2 of two-storey, courtyard walls into something fun, colourful, and reflective of the ideas of the young people it serves.

The activities courtyard is a vibrant, inward-facing space designed to support holistic health and wellbeing through fun, socialising, and recreation. Shielded from residential neighbours, its private, bright, and colourful environment creates a welcoming youth-focused area. The courtyard features space for sports, landscaping, and a painted court by Parklife, blending nature and play to foster active, engaging experiences for young people.

As a direct result from early engagement with rangatahi youth and youth support organisations for the wider Youth Hub project, this courtyard was designed from the outset to house murals. Facilitated by SCAPE Public Art, with support from Field Studio, the project involved ten rangatahi from local schools, including one current resident of the Youth Hub Support Housing, mentored by professional mural artists, Richie (Pops) Baker and Lucas Lunn.

“It’s been wonderful to watch the youth-led mural take shape. The very act of creating the mural is upskilling young people, providing real world experience, and enhancing their career-readiness, and I’m sure the finished work will be an ongoing source of inspiration and pride.”

“The rangatahi deserve respect for working together with people they’ve never met before. They’ve each brought something special to this project.”

Richard Aindow, Executive Director of SCAPE Public Art
Collaborative process

This wasn’t just about brightening up a wall. It was about process - giving rangatahi a real creative project, real mentorship, and a sense of ownership over their space. The group of 15-18 year olds took part in four day-long workshops that helped them develop the visual concept for the murals, before hands-on experience of painting and installing the full art work. From sketching ideas on paper to rolling paint on the wall, they were in it all the way through. And when it came time to paint, the whole community got involved in a public painting day.

Huge thanks to SCAPE, Youth Hub Christchurch, the Farina Thompson Charitable Trust, Mahi Toi, Resene, and Bunnings Shirley for making it all happen. Most of all, thanks to the young people who showed us what this space could really be.

Thoughtful and Functional Design
The process began by understanding David, Ali, and their two children' s specific needs, ensuring the new home would work efficiently for their lifestyle. Key priorities included storage, spaces for activities like food prep, gardening, hunting, and fishing, areas for the kids to have some independence as well as areas for socialising and family gatherings.

Design decisions were guided by practical considerations: balancing the budget between the utility areas and the main living spaces, giving the soon-to-be teenagers rooms with a sense of individuality, and working with existing trees on the site, which pose limitations by their prominent location on the site, but also create interesting spaces and opportunities to capture the best views through and beyond them.

The result is a light-filled, flexible home with thoughtful details. The family now have an elevated mezzanine net for the teens to hang out, a bay window nook connecting indoors and outdoors, and a unique utilitarian shed and storage area maximising the site. The house achieves a balance of function and thoughtful design, and ongoing engagement with the family helps us understand how it serves them day to day.
