Grandstandium

2015

A relocatable mini-grandstand adds a sense of spectacle to any event.

Created with Gapfiller for the 2015 Festival of Transitional Architecture, the Grandstandium was designed to be a practical provider of seating for temporary events, but was also aimed to spark playful conversation about the Government’s stadium anchor project.

The Grandstandium seats 32 people and features a retractable awning to protect spectators from sun and rain. It can be towed by a 4WD or ute to be used at events all over Ōtautahi, adding spectacle to whatever it is placed alongside.

The Grandstandium is a small project with big impact, reflecting exactly what we love about working across all scales of design at Field Studio. Created as a place for enjoyment and community activation, it offered an opportunity to focus on joyful design, craft, and bringing people together in a simple, meaningful way. Projects like this allow our team to work closely with fabricators and skilled trades, building a deeper understanding of materials, making and detail. The lessons learned through hands-on, small-scale work like this feed directly into how we approach projects of every size and sector.
